Moving Shadows
"Moving Shadows, W 37 Street and 6th Avenue, New York City, 2021" is one of my personal favorites of my NYC work so far. Taken from my hotel room window in a mere 1/2500 of a second, I think it captures a mesmerizing moment in the bustling city. It was the concrete patchwork of urban hues of cool gray and fading crosswalks that initially caught my eye. Then I was just waiting for something interesting to happen. That’s when the taxi aligned with the arc of the stoplight pole adding a sense of harmony to the frame. Bicyclists are coming at the taxi from the bottom-left and top-right with the bottom-left one deciding to just go through the middle of the intersection. The white bag of the top-left figure aligns with the white of the crosswalk. The top figure seemingly paces to step over the white stripes while the bottom figure is stepping from one to the next. The three bottom-right figures are the only ones in the frame going the same direction while everyone else is going different directions. I think the photograph encapsulates the city's constant movement within an interplay of light and moving shadows.
