Color Colonization is one in a series of works in which I’m using an air blower and air compressor to move and blend paint on the canvas instead of a brush. There are plenty of drips and splatters thrown in as well, but the primary technique of using an air blower (not to be confused with an air brush or spray gun) gives me a level of control, or influence, of the paint but comes with a lot of unpredictability which I like. The colors move and blend together in lively and fascinating ways. I like to get up close with a painting and see an incredible amount of detail. Watch the accompanying video to see the intricate and ever-changing detail in Color Colonization as your eye moves across the canvas.
Color Colonization came to me in the middle of the night in late 2015. I got up to sketch the painting in my art journal along with the detailed steps and layers of colors that I would later use to create it.
