    Arkansas Telescope

    ,
At night in the flat Delta farmland of Northeast Arkansas the stars are incredibly bright. With no city lights and no lights on the horizon, except for perhaps the flashing lights atop a radio tower far off in the distance, it is dark. Very, very dark. In the summer the mosquitoes will eat you alive, but from autumn to early spring the cool nights are a wonderful time to go out with binoculars and look up at the stars. As a kid I remember taking a notebook with me that I was trying to use as a journal. I wanted to fill it up with something, but I didn't know what to write about. I think at the time I wanted to be poetic, or to at least record some type of memory, but as a child no words came out. I didn't realize until later in life that I should have created a visual journal instead. I needed an art journal instead of a writing journal. "Arkansas Telescope" is inspired from those childhood memories of the colorful celestial sky that I observed from my grandfather's farm in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. The particular scene that it depicts is an imagined one. My grandfather didn't have a grain silo, but there were others nearby. The frame for this painting was created by me using barn wood from my grandfather's barn which I collected and saved after it had collapsed. -- Terry Smith, 21 June 2017

This painting undulates with vibrant gold. This painting is part of my unique work as an artist in which I am using pressurized air to move ink and paint already applied to the canvas. The air becomes my brush. However, a lot more went into this painting than the golden abstract elements. Look closer and you will find incredible depth and detail.

  • Color Colonization is an contemporary abstract painting by artist Terry Smith. Acrylic on canvas, 2016, 40" x 60" x 1.5".
    $1,685

    Color Colonization

    ,
Color Colonization is one in a series of works in which I'm using an air blower and air compressor to move and blend paint on the canvas instead of a brush. There are plenty of drips and splatters thrown in as well, but the primary technique of using an air blower (not to be confused with an air brush or spray gun) gives me a level of control, or influence, of the paint but comes with a lot of unpredictability which I like. The colors move and blend together in lively and fascinating ways. I like to get up close with a painting and see an incredible amount of detail. Watch the accompanying video to see the intricate and ever-changing detail in Color Colonization as your eye moves across the canvas. Color Colonization came to me in the middle of the night in late 2015. I got up to sketch the painting in my art journal along with the detailed steps and layers of colors that I would later use to create it.

  • On Target, acrylic on canvas, by Terry Smith
    $1,095

    On Target

    ,
Every inch of On Target is rich with texture and detail. It measures 36" x 40" x 1.5". It’s acrylic on canvas that has been hand-stretched by the artist and gallery-wrapped onto thick stretcher bars after the painting was finished. In other words, the painting seamlessly wraps around the edges. It doesn’t require framing, but it could be float-mounted in a wood frame if desired. See the accompanying video further below to see it up close!

  • Notes of Gold contemporary art music painting
    $995

    Notes of Gold

    ,
Eye-grabbing and perfect for any music lover, Notes of Gold measures 36" x 36" x 1.5". It's acrylic on canvas with a secret recipe of ash, chalk, graphite, and oil pastel thrown in. I stretched the canvas myself and gallery-wrapped it onto thick stretcher bars. The edges are painted, so it doesn't require framing.  I worked a very long time on this one. Then I let it set 2 or 3 months, mulled it over, and decided to work it over some more. The result is a painting with great depth and detail. This painting is part of my music notes series.

  • Fayetteville by Terry Smith, 2015. Oil on canvas painting.
    $1,685

    Fayetteville

    ,
Add a permanent fall feeling to your home with Fayetteville, a landscape with abstract tendencies. Fayetteville was inspired by the spectacular fall colors of the Ozark Mountains and named after Fayetteville, Arkansas. It's part of my lifelong body of work of artwork about the state. Almost all of the work on this painting was done using palette knifes and slowly worked over many months as I allowed the oil paint to mostly dry between each layer. For the tree's foliage I built up thick layers of impasto. I also cut layers of paint to allow underlying layers to show through. Highlights were created with several coats of glazing. The tree shimmers with beautiful reds, oranges, and yellows. I think of it as representational with abstract tendencies. The heavy canvas is hand-stretched over thick 1.5" stretcher bars, and the gallery-wrapped edges are painted so no framing is required. As always, I offer custom framing if requested.

  • San Francisco painting titled Somebody Stopped the Sun Just So by Terry Smith, 2015
    $1,095

Somebody Stopped the Sun Just So

    ,
Inspired by many trips to San Francisco, this mixed-media piece is a combination of acrylic panting and my own photographs. The background painting features a heart referencing the "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" song and theme as well as the many heart sculptures that have been placed around the city. Two white lines lines form a sailboat mast. A photographic image, in archival pigment ink, of the Transamerica Pyramid building was transferred to create the sail of the mast. A yellow cable car, blurred and in motion, is sailing down the hill. To the left, of course, is the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. At the bottom, forming the "hull of the vessel", is a silhouetted panoramic of the San Francisco skyline within which once again the Transamerica Pyramid is featured and aligns centered on the mast. This painting was completed by the artist on a flat piece of canvas before being stretched on 1.5" thick stretcher bars. The edges are painted, so it does not require framing unless desired.

Le Marais, October, In the Rain

    ,
Dramatic layers of color give this painting a calm and soulful presence. I titled the painting "Le Marais, October, In the Rain" because it reminds me of cool October rainy walks in Paris. This painting was completed before it was wrapped on the stretcher bars, so it seamlessly flows over to all four sides of it's gallery-wrapped edges. It ships wired and ready to hang.

    Tricolour II

    ,
Originally a train station, the museum building for the Musée d'Orsay is one of the most iconic landmarks in Paris with its two large clocks facing the river Seine. From inside the museum the view through one of those clocks to Sacré-Coeur on the summit of Montmartre is equally as iconic. I've visited Paris many times, and the idea occurred to me of painting the blue, white, and red stripes of the French flag, the French Tricolour, overlayed with the Orsay clock with its view of the Sacré-Coeur. This painting, Triclour II, is the second rendition I've done of this theme and different (though not better or worse) in color and approach than the first. I first primed and painted the Tricolour onto a wooden panel through several painting sessions. I also painted in darker areas for depth and added highlights. I printed one of my own photographs of Sacré-Coeur on an image transfer film with archival pigment ink and transferred it onto the wooden panel. I repeated that process with my photograph of the large iron clock hands. With both of these image transfers I sanded the pigment on the transfer film beforehand to allow some areas of the underlying painting to come through more than others. The 1.5 inch edges of the wooden panel are also painted, so this piece is ready-to-hang without additional framing. I think it's bright, attention-grabbing and very representative of the Paris that I know and love. This painting is part of my ongoing body of work of Paris paintings and photography.

    Stellar Crossings

    ,
In Stellar Crossings the face of a figure looks up at the timeless and eternal mantle of the stars. The face is reminiscent of the Moai statues of Easter Island. While the figure is at rest, the stars look to be alive with movement, like an entire galaxy that never sleeps. Stellar Crossing is signed on the reverse by artist Terry Smith and ships framed and ready-to-hang.

    Notre-Dame de Paris

    ,
Through texture and depth “Notre-Dame de Paris” conveys the timelessness and character of the classic Gothic cathedral at the center of Paris. As an artist and photographer I’ve made many trips to Paris, and Notre-Dame is always one of my first stops. I don’t feel like I’m there, like I’ve really arrived, until I re-visit the landmark that took 400 years to build. In this painting I built up many layers of paint, scrapping and repainting along the way, until I arrived at a deeply textured and colorful surface. Then I used a technique to transfer one of my own photographs of Notre-Dame on top of the painted surface. This method is another contemporary technique to apply real, archival pigment to a painting. On a work like this the photo doesn’t transfer completely. There are holes, gaps, and cracks as it blends with and into the underlying painting. I sanded the photo while it was still on the transfer film in order to enhance that effect. The result is visually arresting and even reminiscent in some ways of an impressionist painting but in a more contemporary style. “Notre-Dame de Paris” is a 14 x 11 x 0.75 inch canvas that is framed in a glistening golden canvas floater frame and arrives ready to hang. The outside dimensions measure 17.5 x 14.5 x 1.5 inches.
